We went to BJ’s today for the first time, and unfortunately, it wasn’t a great first impression. The first thing that surprised us was how empty the parking lot was. When we went inside, there was one family at the membership desk with one employee. They appeared to be having a friendly conversation while setting up a membership, which is completely fine, but there was no acknowledgment that we were standing there, no hello, no “we’ll be with you shortly,” nothing. Nothing until we walled away we got an..oh...sorry. Once we started walking through the store, without a membership, it was almost completely empty. We barely saw another customer or employee the entire time, aside from one person whistling endlessly, which echoed through the mostly empty store and made the whole experience feel oddly uncomfortable. The bathrooms were dirty and appeared poorly maintained, which added to the disappointing impression. We were also surprised that the prices really weren’t any better than what we’ve seen at comparable warehouse stores. My mother is a member and needed tires but was unable to bring the car herself. Not only did they service her vehicle but also gained a customer! The tire department was absolutely phenomenal to work with and I couldn't be more grateful for the quality work!

I went to BJ's Wholesale Club to order a cake for my daughter. I was with my wife and daughter, who both wear hijabs. Unfortunately, our experience at the bakery was extremely disappointing. The bakery employee was dismissive, impatient, and treated us with a level of disdain that made us feel unwelcome. Rather than helping us with a simple cake request, she gave us the impression that our business wasn't wanted. We left and went to the Meijer on South Pennsylvania Avenue, where we made the exact same request. The difference was night and day, we were treated with courtesy, respect, and kindness, and they were happy to help. I can't say why we were treated the way we were at BJ's, but the experience left us feeling that we were being judged because we looked different. No customer should leave a store feeling unwelcome. Because of this experience, I will not be renewing my BJ's membership. I hope BJ's provides better customer service training so that every customer is treated with the same respect and professionalism, regardless of how they dress or what their faith may be.

RACIST SHOPPING TRIP THAT LEFT ME SHAKEN... I shop at BJ’s Wholesale often, but my recent experience with Ron H., the receipt checker, was extremely upsetting and unacceptable. My sister and I had bagged our items before reaching him, which was not a large amount of items. When I greeted him politely with a cheerful, “Hello, how are you today?” he rolled his eyes and rudely said, “Don’t bag your things before you get to me again!” I explained that I have always done this, and instead of speaking to me respectfully, he responded with more rude words and a harsh tone, saying, “I need to count your things!” If he had simply explained the policy kindly and spoken to me like the adult that I am, the situation would not have escalated. Instead, he continued yelling at me as I walked away in front of other customers. I was embarrassed, shaken, and hurt. Such a traumatic experience. What made this even more troubling was that the customers before me also had bagged items, yet he treated them politely. I also watched him treat other lighter-skinned customers with kindness and a big smile before interacting with them. It is very hard not to take that as racism. He then continued to treat

I like having an option to grocery shop on the west side of Lansing, but I do find that their prices are slightly higher than Sam’s Club with a smaller selection of groceries and goods. BJ’s does have an easy to use app that I’ve been leaning about where you can clip additional coupons to save, although I find that somewhat inconvenient as I expect already low prices when paying for a wholesale membership. Some great perks about BJ’s have been their extending hours, closing at ten, curbside pick up and a gas station that also exchanges propane tanks.
